Mahogany
c. 1800
Dimensions: H x W x D: 116 x 90 x 53 cm
Description:
An extremely rare standing or lectern, made in France around 1800.
The round legs, which taper towards the bottom, rest in brass feet and feature the fluting typical of the period. At the bottom, they are connected by a cross-bar or shelf.
The middle section features a leather-upholstered pull-out tray, two drawers and a further shelf above. The drawers themselves are made of oak. The fronts, like the rest of the piece, are made of solid mahogany. The corner joints of the drawers are neatly finger-jointed, with a semi-concealed dovetail joint at the front and an open one on the rear panels of the drawers.
At the very top is the leather-upholstered writing, working or speaking surface, which was used for storing documents and/or presentation materials. It is framed by a brass moulding with a gallery built upon it. The brass edging was specially made for this piece of furniture. Like the rest of the piece, it is of exceptionally high quality and fits seamlessly around the edge without any visible joints.
To the left and right are further drawers situated beneath the sloping work surface.
Condition: Very good, restored condition with a hand-polished shellac finish.
