Three antique armchairs

Dimensions: H x W x D: 92 x 55 x 57 cm, seat height: 45 cm

Description:
A very fine set of three antique armchairs, made in the Rhineland around 1830.
The furniture originates from the Schulte Kemna grain distillery in Wattenscheid-Leithe, founded in 1875. The Schulte Kemna estate was built around 1830; the chairs were therefore likely part of the original furnishings. Around 1900, the estate was expanded to include a larger villa, complete with an English-style park and a palm house. The armchairs were part of a larger ensemble and have remained in the family’s possession ever since.

The sabre legs, which taper downwards, support the frame, which is slightly curved at the front and tapers towards the back in a rounded arch. The entire backrest follows this curve, sweeping elegantly forwards at the sides.
Due to their characteristic shape, seating furniture of this type is known as gondola chairs. Examples with armrests, known as gondola armchairs, are comparatively rare. The armrests echo the elegant curve of the chair and end in volutes at the front. Their front supports are formed by the extensions of the front legs.
