Southern Germany
Walnut
c. 1830
Dimensions: H x W x D: 192 x 123 x 41 cm
Description:
Antique bookcase from the Biedermeier period in southern Germany, circa 1830, with a wonderful patina.
The overall depth of 41 cm is measured at the top of the cornice. The body depth is 36 cm, and the usable internal depth is 31 cm.
This two-door piece stands on unusual, block-shaped legs with a multi-part, horizontally stepped design.
Each of the two doors is divided into three panels. The two upper panels are glazed and still feature the original, slightly wavy glass. The lower door panels are veneered in walnut and display a symmetrically arranged, mirrored grain pattern.
Careful attention was also paid to the selection of veneer for the side panels of the cabinet. Here, the grain runs continuously from the plinth to the top of the cabinet. The left and right sides of the cabinet are designed with grain patterns that are mirror images of one another.
The light-coloured interior of the cabinet features five adjustable shelves, which can be raised or lowered using so-called notched rails.
Condition:
Restored to a very authentic condition, with signs of age and wear deliberately retained. The surface has been cleaned and polished with shellac.
