Walnut
late 18th century
Dimensions: H x W x D: 73 x 75 x 63 cm
Description:
A truly exceptional, multifunctional games table, created in the Italian classical style of the late 18th century.
The tapered square legs are split down the centre, with each half connected to the other by a wing nut. Once the wing nuts are loosened, the inner section of the table can be pulled out sideways. This is guided by a dovetail-jointed ridge strip.
This provides an additional playing surface for backgammon, covered in black leather, alongside the chess board.
On either side of the main table there are two brass knobs each, which lock the chess board into position. By releasing these locks, the playing surface can be turned over. The felt-covered reverse side serves as a playing surface for card and dice games.
As well as the table’s extraordinary transformable function – which I have never seen in this form before – I am particularly impressed by its unique patina.
During the restoration, not only were all signs of ageing in the wood deliberately preserved and conserved, but also the iron wing nuts, which have developed a truly wonderful patina over the decades and centuries.
And so, in my view, this table is an absolutely collectable piece of furniture, indeed one worthy of a museum.
The game pieces shown in the photos are not part of the original set. The backgammon pieces are included in the delivery.
